Times and Audiences change. What worked for the show in the 70s and 80s wouldn't necessarily work today. Could you imagine trying to pitch a half-hour soap opera centered around farming nowadays to the networks?
As long as there is at least one biological Sugden and Turner and Pollard are still in it, the show will never completely desert its roots.
this is when emmerdale farm was good and was called emmerdale farm and showed alot about farming not now its rubbish and never watch it and they dropped the farm from the title wish it would go back to the way it was
This takes me back to my childhood. There's some good banter on the show these days, but nothing to compare to Wilks, Amos and Seth... and Walter - did he ever shut up?! ;)
@oKanoxD .....and soon to return Michael Feldmann on the anniversary of the plane crash of 1993, who still blames Eric for the death of his mother Elizabeth.... Will be great to find out if Pollard really murdered her..... The upcoming fire looks great, I wonder which 1 (or 2) will perish?????
@oKanoxD Programmes evolve with time, it's only natural, but some of the characters from this time lasted well into 90s and 21st century, Jack, Seth, Joe (leaving in 1994, killed off in 1995), Annie (who left in 1994 and returned in 1995 and 2009 for both Jack & Joe's funerals. Likewise there has been many characters from the 90s that are still key players in the show, Alan Turner, Eric Pollard, Viv (soon to depart), Betty, The Dingles, Terry, Paddy.
I love the fact that even though there a noticably less scenes per episode, the show is still enjoyable even then. It was never dull then and it certainly isn't now, the recent stuff involving Mark's murder case and Holly and drugs have been fantastic... :) Long may Emmerdale continue....

Amos and Mr Wilks were LEGENDS!! And what Amos said about fraternising with the Catholic Church is spot on.

Al Dixon debuted as Walter in September 1980, and last appeared in the show in 1985.

Shame they're no current cast in this episode it makes this episode seem like it was part of a completley diffirent program.

Jack had such energy and humor at this time.
I love the banter between Amos and Mr. Wilks. It's so natural.
