Norval Morrisseau (1931 - 2007) was an aboriginal Canadian artist whose paintings reflected the legends of his people, the friction between native and European cultures, his existential conflicts, and his mysticism and spirituality. A self-taught painter, Morrisseau was raised by his grandfather who taught him about the stories and legends passed down amongst the Ojibwa people and introduced him to Ojibwa shamanism. His work was initially criticized by the native community for its depiction of traditional spiritual knowledge that until then had been passed down only orally.

The song is called "The Vanishing Breed", by Robbie Robertson.
