In my talk I will give a short account of my understanding of the causes of the conflict in Darfur, and its gender dimensions that are manifested in the excessive use of gender-based violence against women, and then I will provide recommendations for the short and long-run. Of course I will be speaking from the vantage point of a Northern Sudanese exiled woman who has had access to education. I have not been affected by war in the same way that women in Darfur have been affected, but I do not take a neutral stand in relation to what they experienced. This vantage point, as has been argued by Patricia Hill Collins (1997), suggests an unfinished, but not an irrelevant perspective on the conflict and its effects on women.
