Chris Boyce talks with Stefan Molyneux of Freedomain Radio about his statistical analysis indicating that psychological therapy is 32 times more effective at promoting happiness than increased income.

Article: http://www.fdrurl.com/cboyce

Chris Boyce is currently an Early Career Research Fellow funded by the Institute of Advanced Study. Chris graduated from the University of Surrey with a First Class honours degree in Economics. He then moved to the University of Warwick to complete an MSc in Economics and a PhD in Psychology. His current research remains primarily within the field of economics but draws on ideas from psychology. Specifically he is concerned with understanding how economic circumstances influence an individual's health and happiness.

  • Thanks, Stef. Positive and intelligent stuff, and curiously it cheered me up. Perhaps it's adults talking about psychology and self knowledge without whispering or looking like they just shat on the floor.

  • Haha, very well put my friend! :)

  • WARNING TO ALL STUDENTS: Dr. Vincent McKee,who used to run a company in Coventry offering private tuition, called ICUT (UK), has now changed the name of the company to University and Academy Tutors, or UAT (GB). DO NOT approach ICUT/UAT for your tutorial needs.Dr. Vincent McKee was outed as a FRAUDSTER by Sky News in January 2011. As a result, McKee has changed his company's name and HIS OWN NAME : he now calls himself Patrick Murray, and he is STILL DEFRAUDING STUDENTS.Just Google his name !

  • Im in the middle of one right now and can sign what you two guys are discussing, actually EVERYBODY should try some form of psychotherapy... you cant imagine how much stuff which isnt really us, we carry around, that keeps us from evolving fully

  • Stefan.....I don't know you, but right off the top you sure do have a great vibe. You offer a lot of value.

  • @loodimity thank-you, very much for your reply!

To think that one has to be unhappy to undergo therapy is a misconception of what therapy is about, which is self-acceptance as well as self-improvement. These are extremely beneficial things to do when you are happy, but unfortunately for most people their lives have to get extremely negative and unhappy before they are motivated to go to do something about it.

  • One needs to be very cautious who is doing the therapy and where they are coming from. There are some credentialed individuals who use a singular template/diagnosis for finding every problem an individual has is they were abused by parents. This is akin to seeing a doctor for a bloody nose and being told they have broken arm - - as it is the only diagnosis they make. That sigular template comes out of the book,"The Courage to Heal" .

  • do you have to be unhappy to undergo therapy?

  • he does seem a little "uptight", here, maybe. :D just kidding.

  • what about getting monetary gain AND psychological therapy
