This is a video of Oscar our hand reared Asian Short Clawed Otter interacting with us at his Bed Time feed. This is just him and us as we would normally say goodnight to him.

Hopefully it will get you a bit closer to what it is like to be lucky enough to have an Otter. We have had him a few months now, and our friendship is still developing. He is learning new words and play, and we are seeing more and more of his character being expressed, the more he trusts us.

You will see some examples of how he plays with us - tugging on our fingers, How we 'chatter' to each other, how he has learnt certain words like 'Kiss' (contact between noses being one important way of building an bond with an Otter) and how he eats with his fingers! A lot of the interaction has developed naturally, and continues to. For example, the tugging on our fingers developed from using toys, and us making a 'growling' sound as we would with a dog, to Oscar reciprocating and moving onto our sleeves, shoelaces, and eventually our hands and fingers. He now plays with us pretty much as he would with another Otter. And we trust him. You can also see him attempt to destroy my Camera strap!

We hope you enjoy the video - any questions please leave us a comment.....

More videos in our Otter Diary to come!

Thanks to some special people who made this all happen. :)

If you have any questions just message or comment - a lot of people ask how they can gt an Otter - well, it isnt easy, and you should get experience working with them at a Zoo or Aquarium first. I started working with two Otters Mia and Smudge who are in my other videos at Lakes Aquarium, Cumbria.

  • probably shouldnt encourage biting. like with any baby animal super ute, then they get their adult teeth. hard to train them out of it.

  • @KpMissPanda He is an adult. If I thought there was any danger I wouldnt do it.

  • This is so cute! But how did u get that otter? I found an otter that was not really a baby but not an adult laying on a rock eating a fish...and I really wanted to take it home but I was sooo scared because what if it attacked me? Are they harnless?

  • @SieraAnnBeagan Hey there. They are beautiful animals. But, to be honest, you shouldnt approach them in the wild. They are pretty shy, and should be left alone especially when eating! They could harm you, but it depends on your relationship with the Otter in question.

  • OMG! CUTENESS BEYOND BELIEF! :D :D :D :D :D :D This just makes me want an otter even more. :D

  • @MilitaryBrat81 Well, as I have said on some of my other videos - if you can get some experience working with them first or help out at a sanctuary then thats a good place to start.
