yes, I think this applies to our current national leadership -- 'the worst we've ever had but not the worst the world has ever seen'. Interesting that it was written 3 years ago. We are a divided country, for sure.

Don't forget that the marshall plan was partly implemented by self-interest. With WW2 ending, the Cold War practicaly started. In that time the US required a strong Europe to enhance the spread of capitalism and democracy around the world, which I think was a requisite for the internationalization of trade from which the US economy heavily benefited.
In that sense, the money spent on the rebuilding of Europe can be seen as US expenses of investment as it supported the building of a US hegemony.
