Classic Game Room HD - THUNDER FORCE 3 review Pt2, Genesis

PART 2 of 2! Review of Thunder Force III for the Sega Genesis. One of the greatest side scrolling shooting games of all time.

Classic Game Room HD is a new member of the Classic Game Room family. A more relaxed, subdued show reviewing classic video games from the past 30 years.

The Sega Genesis 16-Bit Mega Drive monster was arguably the greatest video game console ever made. Hits like Revenge of Shinobi, Sonic the Hedgehog and Streets of Rage all saw heavy action on the Genesis.

One of the greatest games ever made was Thunder Force 3, a side scrolling shooter where you pilot your spaceshipa against wave after wave of enemy bad guys. This shmup is a legendary classic!

To explain the waving background flame effect: Like most consoles at the time, the SEGA Genesis had an interrupt for horisontal and vertical blanks. So the program code could stop for each scanline and do some calculations which would affect the next scanline. For a wave effect that would be a horizontal offset for the background data lookup. The Genesis didn't have an FPU, so the sine wave was probably a lookup table :-)

This would have made a good shooter for the arcade. I'd pour in my quarters just to hear the music from the underwater level alone. The game was a bit too easy though. After a few tries, you can have all the stages memorized and it's possible to complete the whole thing without dying even on the hardest setting.

i got a retron 3 it was complete garbage, they are made in china and their is absolutely no quality assureance, the sound is terrible and the genesis ports on mine didnt work at all

@Sentinal6 for a more domestic approach there is raiden IV and raiden fighters aces which mark has reviewed both also there is a ton on the XBLA like deathsmiles II, trigger heart excelica, raystorm HD, and a few more i cant think of off the top of my head. also i recommend getting a hori real arcade pro vx sa arcade stick as it is the best stick ever made imo.

@Sentinal6 well i would reccommend starting out with importing dodonpachi Resurrection first as it was released in the UK and is in english and you can get it for $50 shipped and contains a kick ass music cd there is also espgaluda II and mushihimisama futari both $50 from japan. you could then try muchi muchi pork and pink sweets a double pack from japan but that games for over $100 and is insanely hard (especially pink sweets) i have not tried eschatos or bullet soul yet. all region free.

mark your wrong there are TONS of 2d shooters on the xbox 360 deathsmiles, deathsmiles 2, mushihimisama futari, espgaluda II, dodonpachi ressurection, bullet soul, and eschatos, and muchi muchi pork and pink sweets, these are the ones that will play one an american xbox but there are many more that are japanese only. SO MARK GET TO IMPORTING AND REVIEW EM!! me love you long time

i much prefer the genesis carts of this and lightening force (thunderforce IV) then the sega saturn thunderforce gold pack 2 that games is way overpriced.  genesis ftw

Classic Game Room has inspired me to get an Awesome Sega Genesis(model 1 of course). Because of CGR videos I am now enjoying such great titles as Truxton & Thunderforce III for the first time. Good Job CGR and Good Job Sega for creating such an Amazing console that still provides great entertainment so many years later. Much Thanks!
