The Eastern Coast of India along the Bay of Bengal is called the Coromandel Coast and hence the name was given to this train, as it traverses the entire length of Coromandel coast. Coromandel belongs to the South Eastern Railway.

When introduced in 1977, it had stops only at Vijayawada, Visakhapatnam, and Bhubaneswar. 12841 does Vijayawada Chennai non stop.

Coromandel shares rake with Chennai Howrah Mail.

12842 covers 1662 km in 27.05 hrs, average 64 km/hr and 12 halts.

12841 covers same distance in 26.25 hrs, average 65 km/hr and 10 halts.

12842 departs MAS 08:45 and arrives HWH second day, 11:50.

12841 departs HWH 14:50 and arrives MAS second day, 17:15
