Man this guy is extremely confident when he talks, even when he doesnt make sense and has no idea what the fuck he is saying. He didnt even stutter im impressed, how confident he is in his bullshit.

Is the sky blue? Yes= known known
Are we alone in the universe? I don't know= Known Unknown
Unknown Unknowns describe something that we don't question because we are completely unaware of it. If you are blind (and nobody tips you off),you don't know about colors, therefore it would not occur to you to question the color of the sky . If you didn't even know that North America existed, would you wonder who lived there? Silly examples, but sound statements on Rumsfeld's part.

@Jermetrice What is incorrect or confusing about what he is saying? Sure, it's sort of stating the obvious and contributes little without context, but it makes perfect sense. The first known/unknown describes awareness of a premise or issue that raises a question; the second describes whether or not we can answer that question.

what about the Unknown knowns? the stuff we didn't know we knew? lol

I have never heard such a well-articulated, sensible explanation of U.S. foreign policy during the Bush administration. FINALLY, it has been explained to me, and I think it's the same system that Obama is using, as far as I can tell. The scariest part of this evilmonger's explanation is that -- if you listen to it about three times and really iron out what he is saying -- the bastard makes perfect sense.

He should have mentioned how leftists are a perfect example of "unknown unknowns". You see they're so ignorant, stupid and immature, they really don't know enough to know that they don't know anything. I love getting into debates with these sorry pussbaggers and watching them walk away in fits or try to take a swing at me in frustration. What sorry losers!

All denials.

Rumsfeld was the Bush administration's secret weapon for confusing the shit out of simple minded reporters and to keep them from asking the real questions like where is all our tax money gone to.

How dare you all make fun of this American hero.
He more accurate then any one of you.
He is describing Heisenbergs quantum uncertaint principle,
There is no reality out there.

I love it when people defend this guy!
The thing that is funny is that he is serious about his logic. Instead of just saying that there are things we don't know,
things we think we know, things that we know and things that we say that we know even though we have no idea what we're talking about.
Read People Of Ar's comment in this thread to de-logicalize it some more.
Oh yeah, and lighten up, would you?

The worrying thing is he's essentially making a good point.
"Known knowns" - facts that we know
"Known unknowns" - At least we know to ask the question, but we do not know the answer (that tends to be the frontier of science)
"Unknown unknown" - the stuff we are so oblivious to we don't even know to ask. (When we answer "known unknowns" we tend to make "unknown unknowns" become "known unknowns")
I worry because, atleast for now, HE helps run your country!
