how do guys manage to avoid hitting their balls when bumping the bar off their hips?

Its hard to tell but technically you shouldn't "bump" the bar off the hips. It should be a brush. Although the Bulgarian method kind of has that bump or catapult method.
To answer your question. The only people I have seen hit themselves there either mistimed their jump or they have no muscular protection, meaning big quads. I would say it has more o do with timing of the jump.
