I think she performed this song very well, tenderly, as it was intended.

As for voice, maybe she felt this song deserved a different treatment than what we might otherwise anticipate.

Eartha was a great person. I met her several times at concerts in Germany. No trace of affectation or arogant Star Diva. Among her fans, she was always very friendly, always took a lot Zeit.Auch after strenuous Auftritten.Sie liked your fans. The stars of today are your fans often only as a dollar sign.
