it's about her leaving Lindsey for the last time. She has stated that many times.

@mommapuddin Actually, the lyrics about "hope you're heart's not broken" came later when she rerecorded the song with Fleetwood Mac. All songs are open to interpretation. I think the idea of a woman having to make that very difficult decision to end a pregnancy and saying goodbye to the child she could have had is so heartbreaking. And this song could really sum up that feeling. But I think when she says "baby" she's not being literal. It could be a lover, or a family that never was to be.

I believe the beginning of the song is a reference to the part of the Welsh myth of Rhiannon. She gets locked in a tower at one point or another.

I love this song...i prefer her belting vocals in this version instead of the whispery kate-bush-esque vocals on the fleetwood mac version of "Goodbye Baby"...but still a gorgeous and haunting song regardless. Love her! and love the simple piano behind her...exquisite.

many meanings for Stevie herself,9hear rumours of an abortion with D henley. let alone everyone who hears her art. this is another song in the Rhiannon theme? read up on Rhiannon and prywll her infant son with hair as golden as her own,was taken from her while asleep. she awoke to blood they smeared on her to accuse her of killing him.then tied to horse posts every day as punishment. her son raised by others. all the time feeling that he could not be gone.wondering.Rhiannon became Mare Goddess

Sounds like a demo of Goodbye Baby, circa pre-1976.
