This is a video documentation of my installation Grey Matter. The juxtaposition of start black and white contrast, natural elements created out of unnatural materials, and unnatural elements created from natural materials referenced my personal confusion as an artist and aspiring environmental activist as to how I should approach making art. Using natural materials such as exotic woods, contributing to rainforest devestation for example, or the alternative, using plastics which create waste, cannot be recycled and release toxins into our oceans. The title implies that there is no correct answer, and that indeed actually NOTHING is black and white. The tears, or black space can be read as either nothingness, or flatness, the white as either purity or as technology with its glossy coating. is the black invading the white? or has the white eliminated the black? which represents the natural world, and which represents human civilization? which is the enemy and which is the hero? The interpretation is left to the viewer... as there is no right answer. It is all grey matter.
