Zhang and Mo were some of the best AA gymnasts China ever had, but for completely different reasons. Zhang could put together a routine and competed like a robot. She wasn't quite gold medal material, but she could hit. Mo Huilan outclassed the entire field (even in the deep '96 quad field IMO) with her gymnastics and presence, she was the absolute best, but she just couldn't hit when it counted.

alot of arm swinging

@jlund28 if you mean Huang Qiushuang, she is quite inconsistent too, but a beautiful and graceful gymnast to watch, quite different from other chinese gymnasts.

I also would nominate Yang Yun.

I definitely agree with Zhang's coach. She was a beautiful, talented gymnast. Mo Huilan was a great gymnast, but was HIGHLY inconsistent so she doesn't deserve that title. I also really like Liu Xuan and she could have been a contender for that spot towards the end of her career.

if mo huilan was still competeing today, she would destroy the rest of the field. i think that china might have another one coming up.... she won the allaround in 2009 japan cup
-
A hit Mo is somewhat unlikely... I would nominate Yang Yun.
-
She still for the two all around medals. Mo Huilan's best showing was 4th. And Nan didn't fall during the AA in the olympics or worlds.

Well, arguably Zhang Nan also made silly mistakes when it mattered, mainly on UB and sometimes on FX, but she wasn't competing in as deep a field as when Mo Huilan was competing. There were many strong AA gymnasts back in 1995-1996 that could contend for medals, and by 2003-2004 there was only a small handful left (most of them inconsistent).

They were from different times. Also, Zhang Nan won two all around medals. Mo Huilan won none. She was potentially the best AA gymnast in the world, but she always made silly mistakes when it mattered.
What a routine...She scored higher than Carly or Svetlana on that...I disagree with her coach though. Mo Huilan was the best allaround gymnast ever from China. The difference is Zhang could compete where Mo couldn't.

This was amazing! There were just two errors. I wish she had done this routine in Athens.
