Alternative Miss Ireland (AMI) is an annual beauty pageant that is open to men, women and animals. It is also a non-profit collective dedicated to raising money for Irish HIV/AIDS organisations (over €235,000.00 raised since 1996).
Every year, amongst the traditional greenery of the St Patricks week festivities in the month of March, AMI sets about the crowning of an Alternative Queen of Ireland through an evening of competative spectacle and gender augmentation. The pageant has a traditional structure: The contestants are put through rounds of Daywear, Swimwear and Eveningwear and are judged on Poise, Personality and Originality. But inside of this, anything goes.
10 contestants, each of which, to a greater and lesser extent, will elaborately construct and skillfully imagine an alter-ego — an alternative Miss — which will be realised through costume and performance on stage on the night. Witnesses are participant to grand spectacles that range from the exoctically banal to many ferocious acts of self definition.
CALLING ALL ALTERNATIVE MISSES
ALL QUEENS OF CARICATURE, ALLEGORY & DISGUISE TO PARTICIPATE IN THIS GREAT LEVELLING OF ALL CREATURES
Hail your New Economy of Beauty with the Expiration of Shame and Hubris
Haha, this is so awesome.
It's important that there's an alternative to typical pageants, we can't all be badly fake tanned, bimbo, Barbie clones (thank fuck for small mercies).
And at least this looks like a load of fun.
