Jack attempts to perfect a technique to solder BGA chips at home using a pancake griddle.

JaxHax is a behind the scenes video diary of the work being done on the Open Source Papilio FPGA board.
The Papilio is an Open Source community inspired by the Arduino and meant to ease people into FPGA development. The Papilio community was started by Jack Gassett of Gadget Factory.

  • Looks suspiciously like the Papilio RAM of 6 months ago...

  • @ivanblogs It is indeed the same board. :) I've been sitting on it due to the difficulty in manufacturing and working on a BGA.

  • A GOOD TIP THAT I SAW FOR MELTING THE SOLDER IS TO USE A PENNY AND USE YOUR HEAT SOURCE (HEAT GUN) OR OVEN ON A PIECE OF SOLDER ON THE PENNY AND TIME HOW LONG IT TAKES TO MELT - USE THAT TIME WHEN DOING THE JOB FOR REAL AND USE A HAND HELD THERMOMETER FOR AN APPROXIMATE TEMP - I HAVE SEEN 270C TO 350C ON THE INTERNET WHICH IS A BIG DIFFERENCE BUT IT DEPENDS ON THE TIME ALSO. I AM PLANNING TO UPGRADE A SMALL ADVENT NOTEBOOK PROCESSOR TO DUEL CORE, THE PROCESSOR IS AN N330 INTEL ATOM DUEL CORE BGA

  • well done!!

i just decided to _not_ upgrade my notebook cpu with bga2 "socket"
