Yeah, mostly it isn't really about games but it just speeds up opening programs and things like that. Not really much difference with videogames. Sometimes however it's very useful for gaming.

Maybe you bought the wrong type of RAM,
they're 3 different types DDR, DDR2, and DDR3

It's probably your processor, you can have a lot of ram, but you won't be able to get the best of it IF you have a slow processor.
