@AvatarMarxon90 That motto was only mostly used after 1580.

Remember others before: the personal motto of King Emmanuel I or Manuel I: Manuel Rex Orbis Est (MROE or MORE) in the Armillary Sphere (1500s onwards). Also a phrase similar to the sun rises to he sets is used in the Os Lusiadas - same way as the Sun never sets - dedicated to the King Sebastião at the time.

@Afrocanuk Now if we think about "size" - obviously, examples such as the British Empire or the Spanish Empire were much bigger - thus the motto "the empire from where the sun never sets", related to the Spanish Empire.

Portugal could have controlled a much bigger empire if we had the population of Spain or England - but we didn't. But still... we had colonies in every single continent - a big achievement if you ask me, when it comes to small nations.

@Afrocanuk Portuguese also started the first global empire - anyone who can read a book, is able to understand that. I had a discussion before here on Youtube with a Spanish guy - he said Spain was the first global empire. But with what proof? It's ridiculous. Spain was still fighting to reconquer their territory (against Muslim Granada), while Portugal began to expand in Morocco (conquest of Ceuta in 1415) - and that date is the beginning of the first global empire: Portugal and its empire.

@Afrocanuk No. It really was Portugal. But historians (especially the American History "school") tends to give predominance of the Discovery Age to the Spanish - just because it was the Spanish who discovered South America - let's not forget it was the Portuguese that re-discovered North America (Canada) - proof is the maps of King Manuel I's time, which depict Canadian territories, that would be under the control of the Portuguese crown (such as Terra Nova, or Newfoundland).
