Muscular Dystrophy Association Summer Camp 2005
This video is being broadcasted on YouTube for a limited time to recruit UMDNJ counselors for Summer Camp 2007.
Looking for something to do for a week this summer? Want an experience in pediatrics/pulmonology/neurology/humanism-in-medicine or simply an amazing experience that you will never forget?
Background
Students from NJMS have had the honor of spending a week of their summer at this volunteer camp to help children with neuromuscular diseases in Worcester, PA for the past 5 years. Camp activities include bonfires, s'mores, arts/crafts, talent shows, plays, pool time, contests, songs, sports, and messy games. As a counselor, you will assist your camper (6-21 years old) with activities and either talk about estrogen/testosterone driven topics with the teenagers or run around with the younger ones. No prior experience is necessary and other counselors are there to help out.
This is a great opportunity if you would like to care for someone and make their year. For this week, a camper won't be "the kid with spinal muscular atrophy in a powerchair", but will just be a "kid". A lot of these kids have been coming out to camp since they were 6. You will learn about various neuromuscular diseases since the MDA supports Lou Gehrig's disease, myasthenia gravis, spinal muscular atrophies, Friedreich's ataxia, and Duchenne, along with a host of others. The activities at camp are modified to allow campers, both in wheelchairs and ambulatory, to have fun, be away from home, and enjoy being kids. The entire facility is handicap-accessible, with pool lifts and ramps, modified bathrooms, paved walkways, and much more.
MDA are enthusiastic/driven to make sure they don't have to disappoint a camper because they couldn't find a volunteer. This commitment is only ONE week and will be the most gratifying experience of your summer. Please do not rule out camp even if you have summer research or other work planned. Both of the principal investigators in the labs I rotated through last summer were accommodating to my schedule.

thanks, this video made me cry, my freind died a horrible and painful death from evil Freidrich's Ataxia, keep up the good work - these events are so important, if its one thing i have learnt people with disabilities dont want to be treated different and fussed over, they must be left to be as independant as possible.

I love your video. I'm a MDA volunteer in Illinois and can tell from your videos that MDA Camp in Philadelphia/New Jersey area is just as fun as in Chicago. Keep up the good work and keep posting videos. Maybe someone will see them and sign up.
