Almost 4,500 people died when poisonous gas leaked from a presticide plant in India, owned by US company Union Carbide. Compensation payouts have taken a long time and some are still ongoing amid protests by those waiting for justice.

Despite having been ordered by their own Supreme Court to disburse the funds, the government of India still has some millions of dollars left of the aid moneys, and the ground is still contaminated, even now.

If you can't imagine this happening in the US think again, it almost did. A fatal explosion occurred on Aug. 28, 2008 in Institute, WV. at the Bayer CropScience Chemical plant. This deadly explosion could have easily eclipsed Bhopal India. Bayer CropScience is the only chemical plant in the World that makes and stores enough MIC daily that can cause this kind of mass holocaust.

On 3 December 1984, the plant released 42 tonnes of toxic methyl isocyanate (MIC) gas, exposing more than 500,000 people to toxic gases. The first official immediate death toll was 2,259. A more generally accepted figure is that 8,000- 10,000 died within 72 hours, and it is estimated that 25,000 have since died from gas-related diseases
