Several weeks ago I was conned into going to a heavy metal concert. I was appalled at the stuff they called music. I left during the interval and came home and put one of my Frank Sinatra albums on. This was the first song, the beauty of which is more than obvious. How can this modern garbage be called music, it is devoid of any melody and the lyrics are a joke, it plumbs the depths of musical depravity.

The problem I have with these early Sinatra recordings is not Sinatra himself, but the arrangements. The overly sappy strings, the unnecessary back up singers (why are they even there?). Most singers suffered from this in the 40's and 50's.
Nelson Riddle was a genius. He kept it simple and let the singer do the work.

@archer1949 I agree that the Sinatra-Riddle collaborations represent the best output of his career. Axel Stordahl's arrangements with lush strings were typical of the period, as you have noted. While many prefer the swinging Sinatra of the1950s, these recordings from the 1940s are nevertheless worthwhile in my opinion.

@catman916 Oh well, I guess to each his own.... Because I on the other hand, absolutely hate all the swing / jazzy Sinatra songs --- but loves this type of slow, dragging vocals that he used to do early in his career. It is the Sinatra I want to remember and listen to..... While I love him unconditionally, I want to forget that he did murder a bunch of standard songs by mercilessly jazzing them up.

@DrJennyGyn With the exception of the work late in his career, I love all of output. His Columbia recordings are excellent. Since you really appreciate his early recordings, I highly recommend Frank Sinatra The Columbia Years (1943-1952): The Complete Recordings 12 CD box set. It's pricy, but worth it. Also consider the 2 CD V-disk box set, and The Song Is You, a 4 CD box set of all his recordings with Tommy Dorsey.
