Rare close-up view of wild hawk and buzzards dining and flying together. Also shows a good close-up of hawk and buzzard flight.

Video shows red tailed hawk and turkey vultures contending for prey. Video begins with buzzards peacefully eating. I tried for a closer view and scared them away.

When they returned, a hawk had flown in. It enjoyed its meal as the buzzards watched. I again tried for a closer view and scared them all away.

Next the hawk flew back and so did the buzzards, but only the hawk got to eat. I again tried for a closer view and scared them all away.

Next, only the buzzards returned. The hawk decided it was time to go.

**The red tailed hawk, Buteo jamaicensis, is a large powerful bird. It can weigh around 2-4 lbs. and has almost a six foot wingspan. They have a sharp, strong, powerful beak and curved talons. They tear prey apart with their beaks. The red tails of these hawks showed up several times.

**The turkey vulture, Cathartes aura, is often called the buzzard or turkey buzzard. It is impressively large with a wingspan up to 72 inches and an average weight of over 3 lbs. Its plumage is black to brown and it has a featherless, red or purplish head and neck, with a hooked, ivory-colored beak. It is called the turkey vulture because it resembles a turkey. It is extremely good at soaring, uses thermals, and can soar for hours with little effort.

It has a powerful sense of smell and good eyes. It roosts communally. The female is larger than the male. It is extremely widespread and can be found throughout the Americas. The young are fuzzy and white. It is a scavenger, which feeds on carrion. If not for vultures, the world might have many more carcasses lying around. It seems to be very bright, intelligent, and curious bird. It can soar for hours and do advanced acrobatics.

  • Hawk and Buzzard nomenclature.

In Europe they call Hawks of the Buteo genus "buzzards". The red-tailed hawk is a buteo. Buteos are the broad winged, fan tailed soaring hawks. In North America Vultures are called 'buzzards'. North American Buzzards/Vultures are not related to 'Old World Vultures' although they fill the same carrion eating niche. On a CSI with turkey vultures they kept showing pictures of African and American Vultures. The two vultures of America are the Black and Turkey Vulture

  • ya and only accipiters are "True hawks"

  • sorry to say, but, any bird member to the genus: Bueto, sutch as the Bueto Jamacanensis (Res tailed hawk) are buzzards, not black vultures and turkey vultures.

  • You say gas... I say petrol...rctaney pretty well sets it straight. There was no need for Karlthetosser to be abusive about it.

...anyway that's what the Latin names are for.
