www.fired.tv This week's job tip is how to handle the salary question? This often takes the form of the employer asking you how much money you are looking for. The best answer is, "I'm open on the money, the key is the opportunity." The reason is whenever you state a specific amount (esp. in the first interview) our research shows that it is usually either too high or too low. If it's too high, you will knock yourself out of consideration. If it is too low, you may cheat yourself out of a couple thousand dollars extra.

That is why I recommend the best answer is always say, "I'm open on the money, the key is the opportunity." Keep your cards close to your vest. Leave salary negotiations for later in the interview process. www.fired.tv

  • Excellent answer. I've been stumped by that question a few times already. Not anymore.

    Thanks

  • Interview Questions: How much did you make on your last job? I hate that question, I feel that information is very personal and it has nothing to do with my current salary expectations and/or the salary I will request for that position that I am being interviewed for. Can anyone give me an tactful answer to that question, one that won't hurt the interview? Thanks.

  • What if you really AREN'T open on the money and you don't care about the opportunity?

That doesn't mean you don't want the job, but perhaps you know you will not take the job unless they offer enough compensation. I could not say I am primarily interested in the opportunity, because it wouldn't be honest. I want to feel appreciated, and one way you know when you're appreciated is when you are well paid.

  • Nice tip.

  • nice,i will use this thanx

  • That's right. What he said in the video is truly the best answer when asked for a salary question.
