An adult Laysan Albatross sitting on an egg is banded. During the season when albatross at Midway are sitting on eggs birds are checked to see if their old bands need to be replaced. It is a good time to band or re-band adults and take advantage of how calm they can be while nesting. Since albatross mate for life and return to the same nest site year after year it is also a way to relocate known pairs. In this video Marc Romano from the FWS shows a group of Oceanic Society ecotourists how to quickly band an albatross with minimal disturbance. During the 60 seconds that it takes to band the adult, the egg is securely underneath the parent the whole time.
