WHAT A GAME!!!
This game was INSANE and Steelers fans' celebrations more than matched the excitement on the field!
The police had South Side shut down before halftime with many bars locking their doors, and in some cases staying closed altogether. The rowdiness picked up through halftime when hundreds of people poured out of the Rex Theatre on East Carson, celebrating James Harrison's 100-yard interception return for a touchdown. The score gave the hometown favorites a 17-7 lead with half the game left.
Some of the revelers from the Rex stampeded in front of a 51C Port Authority bus and began rocking it and banging on the windows. One man scaled the bus and celebrated atop it, and about a dozen other people followed his lead.
Anticipating more trouble we headed over to Stadium Central to watch the game at The Hard Rock Cafe... And here's footage of the crowds reaction the last minute heroics of quarterback Ben Roethlisberger and Super Bowl MVP Santonio Holmes to secure the win! Holmes scored the go ahead touchdown with just 35 seconds left on the clock.
***The Steelers made history in defeating the Arizona Cardinals 27-23 in Super Bowl XLIII to win their sixth Super Bowl, the first team in NFL history to accomplish that.***
Moving to Stadium Central was a smart move too - more than 100 people were arrested on the South Side, mostly for failing to disperse from various locations. One officer suffered a possible broken arm and some revelers broke windows, threw bottles at police — including at a state trooper on horseback — and engaged in fights, city police spokeswoman Diane Richard said.
Couches and several garbage containers were set on fire, and several vehicles were overturned as police responded to more than 400 emergency calls during the game and a similar number in the 2 1/2 hours after it ended, Richard said.
Police in riot gear and on horseback were out in force in the city's Oakland neighborhood near the University of Pittsburgh, where thousands of people gathered, and also along the quirky strip of bars known as the South Side. City officials had about 400 police on the streets as a precaution, but they mostly kept watch and let the loud and rowdy celebration run its course. At least one person was arrested for arson and two others for drunken driving.
