Phil Maturano's Lessons: Groups of Five showcases tried and true methods of creating vocabulary and improving technique on the drumset. These are concepts that every drummer can benefit from - Rock drummers, Latin, Jazz, Pop...the works! The lessons carry essential knowledge that is a common thread in all of drumming, based on a foundation of Rhythm - not licks. Phrasing and time is constructed and improved through the study of rhythm, and rhythmic knowledge is the first thing we should explore, especially as drummers.

"Many times we are caught up in the technical and physical side of things", says Phil, "but the most important and widely used aspect of drumming, whether you are a chops master or beginner, is Rhythm. And when you start to learn how it functions in music, it's life changing. Always base your drumming language on your knowledge of rhythm. Not licks!"

Groups of five: This clip explores phrasing using a basic 16th note motif (Groups of 5) and expands it to create a deep understanding of vocabulary possiblities. Here we learn:
A) The basic phrase concept
B) Application and creation of time line structures
C) Expansion onto the kit
D) Rudimental applications
E) Groove, fills and Time line applications using the phrase
F) Expansion to different Genres
G) Soloing applications with examples

Hi there. This is the preview from the clip that the cats at Hudson made. There is no part 2 to the preview. Its meant to give you an idea of what the clip looks and feels like.

The track you hear there is part of my upcoming dvd Inner Clock part 2 and will be available soon! This clip is peripheral material that goes with the DVD. Functions as a stand alone lesson clip but also is part of the "groups of five" performance and lesson section of the DVD:-)

  • Good stuff. Is there a part 2? Also where can I get that track to practice with?

  • Also if you have any questions at all about the material please feel free to write me.

    Kind regards
