@kmj2000 The reason is jobs in other sectors are a few and not high paying. The field of medicine is lucrative but takes too long even to start earning a decent scale.
Due to emergence of IT, opportunities for engineers are plenty especially for Computer Science. Eventually, one should hope the money generated by IT fuels the other sectors for the next generation.
i studied here!!!!! I was in that lab and I would have said the same thing -> that is the computer science lab, the people there are the ones who like engineering.
Go to the commerce classes if you want to see the others!
i know what you mean. for most, as noted by the maker of the video, it is a means to rise above the hardship of their current life. and what parent does not want their child to have a better life than theirs?
the problem in america is that, unlike these indians and chinese who have a tangible dream they can work hard to achieve, we have in a sense ALREADY achieved the dream. we are the dream land they are fighting to enter, and have gone soft - much like how the son of a millionaire is lazy.
Almost everyone in India says they want to be an engineer. It's all they know. There's a lot of pressure on choosing what is considered a "good" career. It's like in my own Caribbean community where people go to law school and med school. Major in English? Horror of horrors. It's not that we all want to be doctors and lawyers but the pressure is there to choose it because it is a "good" career.
