@sonofrattler You have to be a crew chief to be a gunner. At least in the Army. I know in the Air Force there is a specific job for enlisted soldiers to be a gunner.....

Actually, it was my Dad that flew Hueys in Vietnma, not me. I have done extensive research into Army Aviation in Vietnam and I know it was the Crew Chief that manned the left side gun on 'Slicks' and Gunships. Is that how it still is? Thanks for your service my friend and WELCOME HOME! I appreciate your service.

I was always Left Side as a Gunner on the UH 60. Maybe it was different on the Huey?? Best duty I ever had. 167 combat missions and just over 800 hrs combat flight time. Good time

On the UH-60 it is the opposite of the older UH-1 Huey. The Crewchief sits on the right side in the Black Hawk. The reason is that the tail rotor on the Hawk is on the right, not the left like the UH-1. No difference in the crewmembers duty though. The only other reason I can think of is that the landing gear chocks (which obviously the UH-1 did not use) are always placed under the right side landing gear. The standard CE position on the UH-60 is the right seat.

Very nice... Hey, is it still like the "good ol' days" in that the Crew Chief mans the left gun and the gunner mans the right? Thanks to all that serve.. ARMY AVIATION, ABOVE THE BEST! Hooah!

to tell you the truth, i was only along for the ride.......leaving FOB Loyalty heading for Camp Liberty......you are right, they do a hell of a job over there
