This is Part III of an eyewitness account of the World War Two Pacific Battle of Peleliu by Corporal James Edward Ellis. My father, James Ellis, was a member of the First Marine Division. He fought in four major Pacific battles: Guadal Canal, New Britain, Peleliu, and Okinawa, where he was wounded on the third day of battle and received the Purple Heart.

Please check out my novel, "The First Shall Be Last," which is based on my father's war memoirs of the Battle of Peleliu. It is available at Amazon.com, BarnesandNoble.com, or can be ordered at your local bookstore or library.

  • Hey, a friend of mine fought directly under Puller on Peleliu. Great stories about him showing up in tents in the evening to get a feel for how things were going, etc. Once Bud reported to Puller after a scouting mission. He told Chesty that there might be a weak spot on the end of the Jap emplacement and they might be able to bust them up that way. Puller just said, go ahead Moore, do that. Bud hadn't expected such a direct response but that was how Puller worked.

  • Did you see HBO's The Pacific? I thought they did a great job in protraying what the marines on those islands went through. The actor who played Puller was excellent. These were brave me.

  • Thanks, Maddog, for the comment. Unfortunenately my father passed away three years ago this past January. Semper Fi to the "Greatest Generation" and to all Marines who are willing to be the frist to fight to defend our freedoms. We are here today because of this commitment. God bless you.

  • whalehead - I've dedicated this summer to studying the Pacific campaign and it's really been an eye opener. As someone else wrote, the Pacific is the overlooked campaign. I have seen much now concerning Peleliu. Your father's oral history and your compelling film are at the top of my list. Your dad was quite a man. I recently saw a great bumper sticker: You will die - I will die a Marine. God bless you for this memoir. God bless those who protect our liberty.

  • my father was with the 81st.

    Unbelievable misery.

I salute and honor them all.

    The greatest generation.

  • Guadal Canal, New Britain, Peleliu, and Okinawa?! Dear god..

  • the sound effects are so unnecessary and way too loud.

  • a most humble chuckle to 4:35

  • @whalehead Years later Bud was working in Wash. for the Forest Service and was assigned to research the effects of fire in the event of a nuclear attack. They thought it good to get the old marine to get Puller into the project. Bud went to his house knowing that Puller would have no interest in that kind of military endeavor. They had a good talk and he never brought it up. Oh, to be a fly on the wall during that conversation.

  • @whalehead I haven't been able to see the HBO special. I hope to watch it with Bud. I showed him a bit of "Letters From Iwo Jima on an Ipod. Bud Isn't much for watching movies, especially the John Wayne type war movies. I was surprised to see him entranced on that little screen. ''How is it?'' I asked. He looked up after a second, looking interrupted, and just said, ''we lost one'', obviously melding the movie scene to the reactions of a guy who had in fact said that many times before.
