There is a row between the fields
The secrets of the world conceals
And I walked there one balmy day
More beauty than a man can say
I plucked one summer head of wheat
To taste its life so sharp and sweet
Nothing in fantasy competes
With one grain of dust from heavens streets.

I spent some time on Rushlake Green
Such peaceful places seldom seen
Smell the rose and taste the wine
And know the love of friends so fine
I could search one thousand days
And walk a million winding ways
But never find myself at all
Yet here I am, after all.

Some days the rain is all we know
Sometimes the sun refuses to show
Its then I close my eyes to dream
And walk again on Rushlake green
Im thankful for the chance to live
For all the blessings God can give
This worlds not big enough to hide
The joy thats waiting deep inside.

This song was written and performed by Mark (www.marklaurent.co.nz) with Duncan Davidson on Irish whistle and Brenda Liddiard on mandolin. It is track 19 on the album MILLENNIUM HIPPIES, 1998. Most of the photos were taken by Mark, with additional photos and watercolours by Chris Liddiard, and additional photos by Jane Neike.

  • From Don and Maurine who live in Rushlake Green:

Feel that it captures the atmosphere of the village.

  • Hi Harry

Yeah I thought it might be you - I remember meeting you and your sister (what's her name again?) years ago when we've been visiting the Green. Please say hi to D & M from me and say I'm glad they liked the video - hope they don't mind being in it.

Have you seen my video RUFUS AND THE RAIN? It's a book that I wrote which Chris L illustrated. We're trying to get it published in the UK.

    All the best

    Mark
