ALBANY, 06/21/11 -- The New York State Senate recently adopted a legislative resolution honoring Dora Fowler, New York State's oldest teacher, upon her retirement.
Senate resolution 1013 was sponsored by Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I--Oneonta) and Senator John Bonacic (R/C/I -- Mt. Hope) and adopted on June 20, 2011.
"Educators are one of our most prized resources - inspiring our young people and ensuring their future success," said Senator Seward. "Dora Fowler, my Aunt Dora, spent six decades teaching at the Roxbury Central School illustrating the ultimate commitment to her students."
Fowler began her teaching career at Roxbury Central School in 1950, retiring in February of 2011 at the age of 91. During her tenure Fowler taught fifth grade, ninth grade, high school science, English, special needs and writing.
"Dora Fowler was able to turn her passion for education into her life's work. The scores of students whose lives she touched are the better for it," commented Senator Bonacic.
Fowler was born in 1919 and grew up in Wells Bridge. She received both her bachelor's and master's degrees from State University New York College at Oneonta.
In her retirement, Fowler hopes to continue educating others, working with adults who have never learned to read as well as volunteering as a tutor at the Grand Gorge United Methodist Church.
