Le gothique est à l'honneur cet automne avec les oeuvres de Lucas Cranach et, plus inattendu, avec celles de Wim Delvoye. Après Cloaca, la désormais célèbre machine fécale, les objets usuels blasonnés et les cochons tatoués, le plasticien belge dévoile ses cathédrales monumentales en métal, entre autres Christs tordus, vitraux obscènes et tours d'acier Corten. L'intrusion du religieux agit chez Delvoye comme le retour du refoulé, métamorphosé par le savoir-faire d'un artisan totalement libre de son dessein. Ses audaces troublent l'espace-temps, interrogent genres, cultures et pratiques, mélangent intellectuel et populaire, confrontent héritages artistiques et technologies dernier cri. Installée sur le toit du Palais des Beaux-Arts, sa flèche gothique, détourée au laser, va tutoyer celle de l'Hôtel de Ville de Bruxelles.


There is a strong emphasis on the Gothic this autumn, with Lucas Cranach and, more unexpectedly, Wim Delvoye. In the wake of Cloaca, his famous faeces-producing machine, and his embellished everyday objects and tattooed pigs, the Belgian artist presents monumental cathedrals in metal, along with crooked Christs, obscene stained-glass windows, and steel towers. The intrusion of the religious into his world comes across as the return of the repressed, metamorphosed by a craftsman's skill. His audacity disrupts the space-time continuum, questioning genres, cultures, and practices, blending the intellectual and the popular, and confronting the artistic heritage with the latest technology. His laser-outlined Gothic tower on the Centre's roof will echo its counterpart on the Brussels Town Hall.

Met Lucas Cranach en de iets minder orthodoxe Wim Delvoye staat het najaar in het teken van de gotiek. Na Cloaca (de intussen beruchte uitwerpselenmachine), gebruiksvoorwerpen met heraldische motieven en getatoeëerde varkens toont de Belgische kunstenaar nu monumentale metalen kathedralen, verdraaide christussen, obscene glasramen en torens in cortenstaal. Het religieuze luidt bij Delvoye een terugkeer in van wat verdrongen werd, maar dan onder handen genomen door een vrijgevochten ambachtsman. Hij plaatst gedurfde vraagtekens bij ruimte en tijd, genres, culturen en praktijken, vermengt het hoge en het lage, confronteert artistiek erfgoed met spitstechnologie. Zijn lasergeleide gotische pijl op het dak van het Paleis voor Schone Kunsten kruist de degens met zijn tegenhanger op het Brusselse Stadhuis.
