I was 7in 1985 and I was still getting used to living in Franklinton, LA (not far from New Orleans) after my family moved there in October '84. They cancelled school because it was so cold (single digits at night; New Orleans got down to the teens at night).

As a fan of cold weather (even extreme cold), what I wouldn't have given to have been alive and old enough to remember this extreme event. I was but an embryo when this cold weather event happened.

TWC sold out its' soul in 2008 to NBC.

I was born in December of 1984. I've always enjoyed hearing the funny stories my mother tells of getting me around during that January.

@Bluetailvappy - I think Tallahassee dropped to -2° that morning.

I was only 8 in January of 1985, but I remember this well... our pond froze solid here in Tennessee! I think we got down to -21°! That was our all-time record low.

The wind chill factor conversion chart used at this time was grossly inaccurate. It's impossible to have a minus-56 wind chill in Nashville. Not impossible, but pretty close to it. Under today's wind chill factor chart, that minus-56 would be closer to minus-30.

@Pearly1961 actually at the airport the coldest since 1985 was + 6 on that date.

I'm surprised the way the winter this year has been, that we haven't had any cold outbreaks like this.

Yeah, the very next morning here in Pensacola, FL, the temperature was recorded at 5 above zero, the coldest temperature ever recorded here.
We have not touched single digits since then. Not really touched below 20 degrees except on a few occasions.
Very cool (no pun intended). Thanks for posting!

I remember this cold wave being talked about. Birmingham had a low of -6 and Montgomery of 0. This was the worst cold wave since February 1899. They had to cancel Ronald Reagan's inuaguration.
