After a quick charcoal sketch and then toning the canvas with a thin wash of Raw Umber, I restate the drawing using a mix of Transparent Brown Oxide and French Ultramarine Blue.

  • it's just paint. when painted in shades of gray, it's called a grisaille (pronounced griz-EYE), when painted in shades of green it's called a verdaccio. green is sometimes used because it's a good complement to the warmer fleshtones that are painted over it. some painters do a very finished looking underpainting and then glaze transparent colors over it. i tend to do a rather sketchy underpainting. it serves as a tonal "map" for the color layers to follow.

  • Nice work! I never realized raw umber had such a cool green undertone! I'll have to try that for an imprimatura sometime...

  • is an underpainting just paint or is it mixed with linseed oil or anything?
