A view of Antaiji in Autumn, a Japanese Zen Temple founded by Oka Sotan at 1923 for the study of Dogen's Shōbōgenzō.

It was initially placed in Kyoto, and after being abandoned during WW2, in 1949 Kodo Sawaki (1880-1965) and Kosho Uchiyama (1912-1998) 1949 moved there, becoming a place for the only practice of Zazen.

Years later, Watanabe Koho (1942- ) decided to move Antaiji into its present location, to the north of Hyōgo. The German monk Muho Noelke (1968- ) is nowadays the Abbot of Antaiji.

  • When was this film made? I was just reading in Arthur Braverman's book "Living and Dying in Zazen" that Antaiji had closed years ago and is no more. Thank you for this wonderful view.

  • Dear friend, this video has been made on November 2007. Antaiji was founded by Roshi Kodo Sawaki, and it was located in Kyoto. After his death, the temple was moved into its present location, in Kutoyama, near Hamasaka. Best regards!

  • The priest of a buddhist temple was seen in the interview of the television today. Page 1 of the history of a peaceful temple was seen. There is the German character. I who is Japanese feel thanks and the boast of a peaceful temple to the German priest of a buddhist temple. I am a temple where it wants to go by all means.

  • I saw a documentary once on TV in which a German abbot was doing work around his small temple in rural Japan, at one point he was waist deep in a river running past the building, clearing weeds. I've been hunting for it. Does that ring any bells? Anyone seen that?

Thank you very much for your information. I am glad that the temple still exists, even if it's in a new location. It looks beautiful.
