Michael Hordern ... King Lear
Frank Middlemass ... Fool
Gillian Barge ... Goneril
John Bird ... Duke of Albany
John Shrapnel ... Earl of Kent

Directed by Jonathan Miller

Miller directed Hordern, Middlemass, and some others of this cast in an earlier TV version of "Lear" in 1975.

The deliberate Elizabethan style of this production contrasts sharply with the medieval realism of Kozintsev's film version of this scene here:

  • This is a terrible version of the fool. Not the actors fault, but the director doesn't get the role. John Hurt is much better.

  • @shayanaali I recommend reading all his lines and really understanding them. Figure out why they are clever, insightful and funny. Once you do that you should be in better shape

  • The Fool strikes the usual annoyingly false note but Hordern as Lear is really a revelation. Besides Scofield's performance on Caedmon this is the best that I've heard. (And I've heard Olivier, Gielgud, and Alec Guiness). And Goneril (Gillian Barge by the way according to Imdb) isn't bad either.

  • Hordern's Lear is breathtaking.

  • I knew Hordern first through the radio adaptation of Lord of the Rings some years ago (he played Gandalf, of course.) He is even better in person. I would have loved to have seen him live on stage.

  • I hae to study this play inside out for my Leaving Certificate English exam .... it's a bit difficult to adhere to ...

  • i play the fool in a production of tghis we are doing, getting some tips
