This is an adaptation of the first scene of the short story "Save Me Plz" by David Barr Kirtley. The story is read by Mur Lafferty, and is presented in the format of a video picture book (i.e. a short film with simple animation).
This story was published in the fiction magazine Realms of Fantasy and in the anthology Fantasy: The Best of the Year 2008, and also appeared on the Escape Pod science fiction podcast. This story was also listed on the Locus Magazine Recommended Reading List for 2007.
"Save Me Plz" is a fantasy / science fiction tale in which the protagonist, Meg, who lives in a world where college students carry magic swords and battle giant spiders, goes in search of her ex-boyfriend, Devon, who disappeared after becoming obsessed with a World of Warcraft-style online role-playing game. The story offers a wry perspective on the contemporary issue of "video game addiction," and may appeal to readers of Roger Zelazny, Philip K. Dick, Neil Gaiman, George R. R. Martin, Douglas Adams, Orson Scott Card, Philip Pullman, Terry Pratchett, Robert Jordan, and Cory Doctorow.
This video may appeal to fans of the webisode series "The Guild" by Felicia Day, and to those who enjoyed the short film "They're Made Out of Meat," directed by Stephen O'Regan and based on the short story by Terry Bisson.
