20% of Americans knew someone who was hurt or killed in the 9/11 attacks.

Having such a profound impact on the nation, it only made sense to have a tremendous response. As a result of this tragic event numerous tributes were made across both real and virtual worlds such as Second Life.

One piece of land in Second Life called World Trade Center NYC 9/11 Twin Towers is devoted to one of these memorials.

Here, the majestic twin towers are transparent among their beautiful atmosphere. Nearby, a memorial to those lost can be found, including a sign and flowers that Second Life members have left in respect.

However, when you move away from the twin towers, you become immersed in a very commercial environment filled with multiple advertisements and shops.

On top of this, the land seems more devoted to overall tourism as you can view some of NYC's most popular attractions. You have a chance to view the Port Authority or take a magic carpet ride to view the Statue of Liberty.

Besides this, there are also other parts where you can ride your motorcycle around a track or participate in a slightly sexually explicit dance competition.

Unfortunately, this land seems more concentrated on what else it has to offer than honoring those lost.

With so many stores and attractions, one must question if the true purpose of this place is to honor the events of 9/11. One must also see the influence real life has had on what is created and happening in Second Life. Is the overpowering commercialism and materialistic viewpoint of real life society penetrating Second Life?

Maybe.
