Yup. It's called "age". When he recorded this album, he was probably younger than 20. As he got older, as is often the case, his voice deepened, and it became harder for him to create this kind of sound, so he changed the way he used his voice. You can hear both styles on their "Anthems..." album.

Those guys who drop the tuning mostly has no creativity to write and sound heavily. It doesn't depend on what tuning u use.
