I woke up this morning to a rainy day. I looked out and there were 2 of my neighbors cats trying to get at the squirrel on the box on my tree. I watched them for a minute and then got the hose to scare the cats off. That worked for a minute. (It usually works well). I noticed the squirrel wasn't moving however, so I wondered if it was injured.
I went to get my camera sure that by time I got back it would be all over, but to my suprise it wasn't. I started to take video, but it was very slow and I don't hold that still for very long. So I decided to find the tripod. That took me a few minutes and then a few minutes more to set it up.
The video you see here is of that squirrel standing up to and squaring off to the two cats. He even gives Crackers (the yellow cat) a warning bite! Gizmo (the yellow and white cat) seems a little more cautious about the whole thing. Hence why they call Crackers just that (he is nuts!)
By the way, you don't see it at the end, but Crackers ended up way up in the tree while the squirrel scampered away (not because he was threatened, but because he was done eating for now). I watched Crackers very ungracefully try to get back down from the tree minus his squirrel. The squirrel came back about an hour later to resume his eating. All in all , I would say that their stand off lasted for 30-45 minutes at least even tho I only took video of maybe 8 minutes.
The cats and squirrels are all still there thankfully. I haven't seen the cats ever actually catch one yet. Those cats belong to my neighbors and they may soon be gone so I don't know but hopefully they will all have a peaceful spring.
