The art of enameling is closely linked with Geneva in the 15th century, enamelling was mainly used in jewellery, but it underwent a major change with the advent of watchmaking in the 17th century. This gave rise to the practice of miniature painting on enamel rendered with a brush -- like a painting by a master -- for decorating watches. At around the same time as Vacheron Constantin was founded in 1755 in Geneva, miniaturists in the city were perfecting a flux technique known as "Geneva enamel", which created an effect similar to transparent glaze, protecting and enhancing the underlying painting. Whatever the technique used, the preparatory work is long. It demands patience and precision.
A whole range of subjects is found in the enamel work on Vacheron Constantin timepieces, from isolated flowers or garlands to colourful chased and engraved scrolls or exquisite portraits and landscapes. Today, Vacheron Constantin is one of the very few watch manufactures to commission such elaborately enamelled dials. As heir to the ancient and precious lore of enamelling accumulated over centuries by Geneva's premier companies, Vacheron Constantin takes great pride in nurturing this gift from the past knowing that it is perpetuating a rare treasure: an age-old sister craft of true Art.
