New Zealand is poor because the domestic market is too small, and we are too distant from other markets, to take advantage of economies of scale. The capital stock per worker is also small by OECD standards. Finally, the education system does not do justice to the truly bright, and fails the average and below average student. No uni in Australasia can hold a candle to Pomona or Stanford or Berkeley. NCEA is a train wreck.

NZ has lost an inspiring personality such as Sir Paul Callaghan. His another speech which I attended changed the way I will always think about how I can contribute in this economy.

Sir Paul belongs to a small group of great New Zealand leaders. His ideas gave oxygen to those who thought it was time for New Zealand to claim a bright future. The challenge for us all is to take his ideas and treat them with the respect that they deserve. It is almost a year to the day since he spoke at the StrategyNZ: Mapping our Future event. Thank you Sir Paul for your generosity of spirit, time and support. Rest in Peace.

This is absolutely brilliant, exactly what the nation needs to hear. Move away from prime industry it pays $13.50. Great foundation but prime industry is not the walls and roof that will keep us dry. Innovation and technology will give us more sustainability, our kids need to be engaged with this between 8 and 12. Get them thinking early, Love the korero Sir Paul
