The first stakes race of the 2009 American Quarter Horse & Mixed-breed Season at Remington Park on March 8 boasted a solid field of older horses with combined career earnings of more than $2.8 million. Rolling away from the wealthy group in the Grade 2, $51,950 Eastex Handicap was Separate Bet, in track record fashion.
Owned by the Leedey, Okla. partnership of Harrel, Berrett & Adams and conditioned by seven-time consecutive American Quarter Horse Association Champion Trainer Paul Jones, Separate Bet came away from the starting gate well. He made up ground on early leader Ima Candy Suspect before pulling away to win by 1-3/4 lengths under Cody Jensen.
The 5-year-old gray gelding flew through the finish line, stopping the electronic timer in :17.273, a new track record for 350 yards. The new mark knocked out the previous standard set by Jess Zoomin during last years Heritage Place Futurity trials on May 10.
Ima Candy Suspect held second by a neck over a gaining This Flights For You who finished third. Snowy Alibi was fourth.
The win was the ninth from 21 career attempts for Separate Bet, a 5-year-old California-bred gelding by Separatist from the First Down Dash mare Better Bet On Me. The Eastex was the first win from two starts at Remington Park for Separate Bet who earned $30,000 to push his career total to $455,113.
The Eastex is named after, the 1984 All American Futurity winner who was one of the sports first millionaires and former all-time leading earner. He now is retired in Norman, Okla. at Speedhorse Inc.
