I have a question, I know in ancient japan, their were many sword styles and family dojos that had their own unique "flavor". In modern kendo, do you ever see any spin attacks or more esoteric strikes? in all of the vids I have seen about kendo, they use only a few basic moves. am I wrong? im not hating on kendo, I really enjoy seeing this, im just curious

and one more thing..... u shout also to overcome the fear or whatever..... and the other reason of shouting in kendo while fighting is to make the other player feel that he is smaller.... so if you shout louder... u are proud.... but sometimes in other fight.... one player shouts louder...the other kept quiet....so he was mocked as stupid(the one who shouted)

this is art not a battle..... so every player are really obliged to swing their shinai and move with perfect forms....following every rule of it... kiai is needed because, i dont know what reason....but for me.... the shout is very useful...because it hits much faster....and it distracts the the other player(the one ur fighting with) :P

you can hit as much as you but if it doesn't follow ' Ki-Ken-Tai' it doesn't count as a point. Ki-Ken-Tai is Spirit, Swordsmanship, And both at the exact point of strike. If you hit and your spirit and swordsmanship don't strike at the same time, your points are just pointless strikes.

That is is truely fascinating...I like it. So no points for a wild swing that happens to land in. I guess that rewards only deliberation and control, but in doing so removes any realism from the perspective of armed combat. In a way its all about he honour and mastery of your art in place of potentially 'lucky' hollow victories

not true, the point is to cultivate a mentality which prepares you for any situation, if you really looking to kill someone you would take Iaido instead of Kendo...

yes, unlike fencing, your 'kikentai' must all match in eveyr strike meaning, Spirit+Swordsmanship+Controll, so every strike must show all 3 in order to be rewarded 1 point, whilst in fencing, just wave your saber around hoping to get a point.
