Again, I think that Wendy should not be a loving mother. I think that it doesn't support the careful tone of the movie. If she were more like the book's version, blonde, independent, then she would first of all not be as believable, but more importantly, she wouldn't represent anything. The common themes of Native Americans is portrayed by the hotel as well as Wendy, in her general look. She represents the Native American wife to a European American, abusive husband, so she would be less loving.

I hate to stand up for Kubrick so much, although he's my favorite director, but I think that criticizing Nicholson for being "too good at being a mad man" is unfair. Spielberg once mentioned (to Kubrick) that he didn't like Nicholson's performance that much. Kubrick responded by saying that Spielberg wants different things from actors than Kubrick. It's very much intentional thatJack always feels like a jerk, and there are other connections that can conclude that he's always been one.

Without Jack, it wouldn't have been half as good.

I found most of the characters in this film to be irritatingly one-dimensional. Jack was a mad grimace, wendy was a shreik, and they were lacking in any further character traits, which is a bit tiresome with such a small cast.
