Solar's achilles heel is its variability: Output diminishes when a cloud passes, and it drops to zero when the sun sets. PV plants could generate hydrogen for use in fuel cells -- effectively storing energy to fill in the gaps. But is it economical? NREL Researcher Mike Woodhouse says not yet ... but they're working on it.
