A couple weeks ago my Macbook Pro screen would occasionally get distorted on the right side, with the pixels moving up and down vertically. Since then it has gotten worse-- the distortion is constant and becoming more severe. Oddly enough, the desktop doesn't distort at all, but any windows open that I drag into the problem area become distorted.

I'm taking it in to be checked out at the Apple Store, and will post any results for others who may be having this problem.

UPDATE:

I took my Macbook Pro to the Apple Store, and they immediately wanted it to be shipped out because nobody in the store had ever seen this problem before. I did not want it to be sent out, so instead they decided to order parts to fix it in the store a week or so later.

They said it looked like it was something to do with the logic board, but that they would replace the screen as well to be sure.

When the parts came, I dropped the computer off for the fix. About an hour later, they called and said that when they opened the computer up, they smelled burning and decided not to try to work with the computer, since it posed a fire hazard.

Long story short, they gave me a Summer 2009 new Macbook Pro to replace the old one. I don't know what exactly was ever wrong with the old one (they never got to test the new logic board), but apparently it was a serious problem! If your computer is doing this, be sure to take it in.

  • I'm updating it now in the description. Take a look in a few minutes!

  • I will definitely be interested in hearing the outcome of this. I have a 2009 MBP that is doing similar business. Sometimes it happens, other times doesn't so I'm sure the day I take it in for repair will be the day it stops happening and the day I get it back it starts again

  • Also, I had the same worries (that it wouldn't do it when I took it in) so I took this video and had it ready to show them. If you can take a video of the problem, it may help!

  • MBP late 2008 unibody . I have 2 inch wide band of distortion on left side. Tried to reconnect wire -didnt help. What was the diagnosis of your problem? i need to repair it myself ..HELP

  • same problem here with late 2008 unibody

  • Mine is having a similar problem, but in the middle of my screen. Did you still have a warranty when they sent you a new one? My one year warranty just ended a couple of months ago and I don't have enough money (i'm a student) to repair it.

  • I found a letter in my postbox today. A repair would cost 850 € (1150€ for a new mbp) so I think that it's the logic board... I'll never gonna know it cause they offered me a new one :) yey

  • I've got the same problem with my unibody MB late 08 .. Now it is at the ASP for repair ..

I don't know if it has something to do with this, but the MacBook seems to be very hot sometimes, so that the Alu enclosure was deformed above the usb ports. I hope I get a new one :)
