This was one of my favorite records of 1989, and this song was one of my favorites off it. The lyric is vague, and image-laden, and wide open for interpretation, and the mood is both melancholic yet hopeful too. I left the vocal line pretty much as is, and tightened up the arrangement, but otherwise, it's the song as I know it. Sometimes it's just about presenting the song as best you can to others who may have missed it. Hope you like, thanks for listening.

Lyrics:

For all that it cost him
He never did complain
The chicken-headed man
Feathering the rain

But the last bus is tired
And everybody's gone
The horses are waiting
In the middle of the lawn

Gone for the rodeo
Gone from the tundra, gal
It's after the fair
That's when I see you there

She's sleeping in the canvas
The fat men holler "Who?"
Tender is the night
Is it bleeding out of you?

"Come into my trailer
We'll toast a little bread
Oh look, you've left a hole
Where you laid on my bed"
He said

But you keep what you can keep
When you dive into the deep
There's year after frozen year
That's where I saved you there

Oh, away from the sky [x4]

But everybody's gone now
It's after the fair
And the horses are painted
With the waiting of the air

You turn the carousel on
When the lights have closed down
And watch your ponies run
Through the middle of town

So there ya go, little gal, there ya go
Gone from the tundra now
It's after the fair
That's when I...

Over the fences again
And the vacuums in the hall
And the planes up in the air
That's where I hear you best

Oh, away from the sky [x4]

  • Nice job. Very nice.

  • @drummertech57 Thank you drummertech, very nice of you to comment.

  • I created an account just to comment on this cover. Bravo. This song is a disjointed microcosm of the R.L. Jones persona. As for your performance, brilliant. I used to listen to this album day and night. It is very other-worldly like a dreamland.

  • @whaledone100 Thanks whaledone! I used to listen to this day and night too and I thank you for the comment!

  • Thanx - well sung, sensitive cover. This remains one of my favourite albums ever - it had a huge effect on my life back when; truly beautiful song.

  • @brad42948 Thanks Brad - me too, it came out in a very bad year for me, and it reminds me of that year still, but this song and Atlas' Marker made everything ok!

  • Sounds great and looks beautiful! There was only one person I knew at Berklee in 1990 who could talk to me about how I felt about this album called "Flying Cowboys", that I had bought on a whim that summer. That person was you.

  • @Gskala01 Wow, that is high praise, Gskala! Thanks!

  • @shibbopics It's an album I've always associated with someone dear (especially 'The Horses') who died this year - so I guess it's even more poignant now - something that will forever remind me of her; great music has that ability.
