A 5K Fundraising Walkathon to Benefit the people of New York City.
For more information about the event, please contact:
Angela Seegel (seegela@stjohns.edu) or Jim Walters (waltersj@stjohns.edu)
On Good Friday, April 22, 2011, the Campus Ministry Department and the St. Vincent de Paul Society of St. John's University will sponsor a 5K Walk in solidarity with the homeless of New York. On this day, we hope to demonstrate our willingness to share in Christ's suffering as we walk in unity for all who suffer in the world. We remember in a special way what Good Friday represents - that Jesus died for us on this day so that the world might share in his resurrection. Please invite your family and friends to join us on this day of reflection, prayer, and solidarity.
As part of this day, we ask all our participants and those who support them to help raise money on behalf of those most in need. Supporters are asked to secure sponsors or have them donate directly. Encourage those who sponsor you to be generous. We are counting on you to collect on behalf of those in need. ALL proceeds go directly to benefit local agencies in the New York City area.
In 2010, the money raised supported Catholic Relief Services (CRS) to benefit the people of Haiti. This year we support organizations that directly impacted and provide services for men, women, at-risk teens, youth and children.
Please make all checks payable to St. John's University and return all money to:

~ The route for the Walk is as follows: 1.) From St. Thomas More Church, exit through Gate 1 and travel north on Utopia Parkway. 2.) At Union Turnpike, we turn right and proceed east to Bell Boulevard. 3.) Following a brief prayer service at American Martyrs Church, we continue north on Bell Boulevard to 73 Ave; turn left and go west. 4.) At Utopia Parkway, we turn left and walk south back to St. John's University. 5.) We re-enter campus through Gate 4 and end the Walk at Marillac Terrace Cafeteria. 6.) Estimated arrival time back to campus is 1PM. 7.) Van transportation is available throughout the Walk route - if you or any member of your group is unable to walk the entire 5K route, please notify one of the Walk coordinators and be driven to Marillac Terrace where the Walk finishes.
In keeping with the spirit of the day and upon our return from the Walk, we share a simple meal of soup and bread in Marillac Cafeteria.
This Walk is a pilgrimage in solidarity with and for those most in need. We hope to make others more aware of the hunger and homeless epidemic in our city and our world. Therefore, we strongly encourage active participation through the use of banners, prayer, etc. We discourage stopping for food and other purchases along the route, listening to portable radios and/or lagging behind the group. We also ask that you respect private property along the walk route, and dispose of trash accordingly.
We hope you consider joining us for our 2011 Walk for the Homeless!
