  • Caruso's singing reflects the particular temperament of Neapolitans, streaked of melanchonic sadness. Listen to '' Senza nisciuno'' : only a Neapolitan could have sung in that way..!!

  • Makes sense ! - I'll just HAVE to visit Napoli to take in that feeling. Why havn't I already?

  • Gorgeous singing by Caruso, as usual. Also superb is Leo Slezak's 1905 recording of this. Thanks for sharing.

  • Yes, actually I put a link in my notes (More info) with two YT links - one of them being to Leo Slezak's 1905 version (great transfer), the other one being to Nicolai Gedda's.

  • Sorry, I hadn't noticed. Gedda's version is certainly beautiful as well.

  • Well, I don't expect you read all my comments/ravings, meltzerboy :-)

I put in the links as I consider the versions of both Gedda and Slezak to be comparable to Caruso's. All very beautiful.

  • Just Magical!

  • i mentioned a year ago I played this for Franco Corelli and Jerry Hines. It is amazing now, as it was many years ago these gentlemen were alive. But to have one of the greatest tenors of the 20th century comment on one of the greatest tenors of the 20th century was such a treat. I recall he sang with a few of the recordings of Caruso. including this one. Jerry Hines was less into this recording then other ones and we can talk about that another time.

  • Magic seems to be a very suitable word to describe this very remarkable man and singer who was born on or about this February day, one hundred and and thirty seven years ago.

This, with his other Queen of Sheba recording, the Gounod one, is among the most interesting of his recordings.

  • I think the Slezak version currently on YT is the later one, not the 1905, unless it was posted again. Slezak recorded the aria twice, the earlier recording being the better one.

  • @Slezak sings this in a lower key I just listened to his version on youtube [the one on the right side of this page]
